The town of Hempstead, NY is located in Nassau County, New York. The city has more than four hundred thousand residents, including thirty-four villages and unincorporated areas. The 1990 census reported a population of 725,639. This is higher than all but thirteen cities and states. Its population is so large that it has more people per Town Board member than six state senators. Hempstead shares its border with Queens in New York City.
The Town's white residents earn more than their black neighbors. However, the black population here is significantly poorer than the rest of the Town. As a whole, black residents in Hempstead have lower incomes than whites. While there are some differences, the Town is overwhelmingly white and has very low unemployment rates. In fact, black people in Hempstead are more likely to own a home than whites.
The town has no mayor, but it does have a presiding supervisor. Before 1994, the town had a black representative on the Nassau County Board of Supervisors. The Presiding Supervisors of Hempstead Town, North Hempstead Town, and Oyster Bay Towns were also members of the Board. In 1917, Glen Cove was formed, and in 1989, it was incorporated as a separate town.
