However, a yellow fever outbreak in 1866 killed many residents. The city recovered and built the first cottonseed oil mill in Texas before 1880. The town also had a telephone company, built by the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe railroad, and in the late 1880s contracted for an electrical light system.
