Purmela is located near the intersection of Farm roads 932 and 1241, thirteen miles northwest of Gatesville. The town was founded in 1879 by Martin Dremien, who also served as the town's postmaster. He tried to call the town Furmela, but was unsuccessful, so he changed the name to Purmela. In the early 1900s, the Purmela school district was established, comprised of Basham, Sycamore, and Evergreen schools. By the mid-1990s, the school district was consolidated with the Gatesville Independent School District.
