Bradford was first incorporated as a municipal borough in 1847, covering the parishes of Bradford and Keighley. In 1889 it was granted county borough status, and in 1897 it included the neighbouring towns of Allerton, Bolton, and Bowling. In the mid-1890s it was expanded to include Thornton, North Bierley, and Eccleshill. In 1930, the city included Clayton.
