Saint Stephens Cathedral was incorporated in 1905, when Bishop Hogan decided to move his parish from St. Vincent Parish to the south. The boundary was later moved to Thirty-first Street, which had previously been the Irish neighborhood known as McClure Flats. The new location was not officially reassigned to any other parish territory. The area surrounding the new site was made up of farmland and dirt roads.

The parish grew significantly in the early 20th century, and the new town incorporated some German immigrants. In 1908, a federal bank was built across the street. The Kansas City Journal reported that capitalists had been attempting to acquire the church's property for fifty years. The diocese finally sold the property to commercial developers in August 1922. While Zechenter was still serving as pastor in 1922, he celebrated his last High Mass in German on January 21, 1923.

The Catholic Church was the first religion to establish itself in the city, and its growth is evidenced by the creation of three new parishes. In 1907, the parish was renamed after Fr. Kurt and a new building was built to accommodate the new parishion. The church's new parishion would seat 1,000 people. This expansion was a result of a number of factors, including a larger Catholic population in the area.
