Kahlotus City, Oregon was founded in 1880 and platted in 1902. It was originally called Hardersburg, after a local pioneer family. In 1902, Hans Harder platted the town and renamed it Kahlotus. The name, which means "hole in the ground," may have originated from the Palouse Indians. Others have speculated that it was named after a tribal chief, who once lived here.
