While people of the same ethnic group or sect have traditionally lived in separate neighbourhoods, the growth of oil wealth has changed these patterns. Today, warring factions and people from different backgrounds live side by side in the same community. While the traditional patterns have changed slightly, the overall distribution of the city remains relatively the same. Consequently, Shi'i migrants from southern war zones settled in the eastern suburbs of Saddam City, while Sunni supporters of the regime were mostly concentrated in the Al-Karkh district.
