While the majority of Muskego residents are white, the ethnic composition is diverse. There are traces of Irish and Polish ancestry. English is the predominant language in Muskego, but people from other lands also speak it.
In the 2010 census, the median age of the city's residents was 42.4 years. Thirty-six percent of households were headed by married couples. Another twenty-four percent were headed by a single female and three percent by a male. The remainder was comprised of non-families, with twenty-one percent of households headed by single people. Approximately eight percent of the city's residents were senior citizens.
In the 1950s, Muskego started becoming a suburban city. It was at this time when its leaders began positioning the town as a regional economic center in comparison to other cities. The city has three lakes: Big Muskego Lake, Little Muskego Lake, and Lake Denoon. All three lakes are habitats for various types of wildlife. The name is believed to have come from the native Potawatomi inhabitants who named the area Mus-kee-Guacc, which means "sunfish."
